LIFE NextFUMIGREEN joins World Agriculture Day

Today, 9 September, we join World Agriculture Day. A date that aims to pay tribute to the work of farmers and to highlight the importance of agriculture in global food security and sustainable development.  Agriculture in the European Union is a key sector both economically and socially, playing a crucial role in food production, environmental preservation and rural development.  The EU is committed to making agriculture more sustainable and environmentally friendly. This includes practices such as organic farming, the reduction of pesticides and fertilisers, and the promotion of biodiversity. The Farm to Fork strategy is a key initiative that aims to improve sustainability in the food chain, with targets of a 50% reduction in the use of chemical pesticides and at least a 20% reduction in the use of fertilisers by 2030. The LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project, a European project that aims to develop natural fumigants from plant extracts to control primary pest populations in greenhouse horticultural crops, is working along these lines. LIFE NextFUMIGREEN not only contributes to the reduction of chemical pesticides, but also improves biodiversity and food security. By training farmers in the use of plant-based fumigants, the project promotes safer and more sustainable agricultural practices, aligning with the objectives of the Farm to Fork strategy. With the leadership of Fumihogar and with the collaboration of the Fundación para las Tecnologías Auxiliares de la Agricultura, Fundación Finnova; B&B Asesores Auditores Ambientales; Comercial Química Masso and BrioAgro Tech, the project has a total budget of 2.758.921,01 €, 60% subsidised by the LIFE Programme. Today and always, happy agriculture day!

«Almeria is a leading province in the sustainable use of water and chemical products without any alert, something that differentiates us from other producers outside the EU»

The territorial delegate for Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development in Almeria, Antonio Bartolomé Mena Rubio, inaugurated yesterday at the headquarters of Tecnova, the webinar «LIFE NextFUMIGREEN: new toxic-free agriculture». Organised by the Finnova Foundation, the hybrid event was part of the European Green Week 2024, and featured presentations by European experts who addressed the advantages of using green alternatives to chemical fumigants. «Almeria is a leading province in the sustainable use of water and in the production of food without waste. Our province is one of the main suppliers of fruit and vegetables in Europe. For this reason, from our region we give special importance to the production of quality and sustainable vegetables,» Antonio Mena stressed. «We intend that with innovation it is possible to achieve the economic sustainability of the producer, following the good environmental practices that are already in place. Projects such as LIFE NextFUMIGREEN are an example of a necessary project to transfer innovation tools to the farmer that are really applicable,» he concluded. The conference analysed the current situation of the use of fumigants and the existing alternatives to align with the European Green Deal and the protection of the environment. To this end, it was attended by institutional representatives, partners of the LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project that will test the effectiveness of a new type of pesticides phytosanitary product based on natural active ingredients in the protection of the most representative crops in greenhouses, and leaders of other European projects who have told their success story. LIFE NextFUMIGREEN, a project that responds to the European strategy «From Farm to Fork», to ensure Sustainable Agriculture

Brussels, 27 May 2024- Reduce the use and risk of the most hazardous chemical pesticides by 50% by 2030. This is one of the objectives set out in the «Farm to Fork» strategy that was presented by the European Commission in May 2020 as part of the European Green Deal. This strategy, which aims to transform the European Union’s food system, seeks to ensure sustainable food production, improve food security and protect biodiversity The Farm to Fork strategy addresses all links in the food chain, from production to consumption. It aims to make food systems fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly. By reducing the use of chemical pesticides, the European Commission not only aims to protect human health, but also to promote biodiversity and natural ecosystems. Farm to Fork practices include the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices. In this way, the use of safer and more environmentally friendly methods and products is increased. At the same time, a reduction of hazardous pesticides is also established in order to significantly reduce the use of chemical pesticides and improve food safety. By using sustainable alternatives, the use of safer and healthier food is guaranteed from its origin to final consumption. In this context, the LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project is presented as an innovative initiative that directly supports the objectives of the «Farm to Fork» strategy. 60% co-funded by the European Union’s LIFE Programme, NextFUMIGREEN focuses on the development and application of natural smokes to control pests in greenhouses, thereby reducing dependence on chemical and hazardous pesticides. LIFE NextFUMIGREEN not only contributes to the reduction of chemical pesticides, but also improves biodiversity and food security. By training farmers in the use of plant-based biopesticides, the project promotes safer and more sustainable agricultural practices, aligning with the goals of the Farm to Fork strategy. About LIFE NextFUMIGREEN  The European project LIFE NextFUMIGREEN actively promotes food safety by developing natural pesticides from plant extracts to control pests in intensive horticultural crops under greenhouses. With the leadership of Fumihogar and with the collaboration of the Foundation for Auxiliary Technologies of Agriculture, the Finnova Foundation; B&B Environmental Auditor Advisors; Comercial Química Masso and BrioAgro Tech, the project has a total budget of €2,758,921.01, 60% subsidized by the LIFE Program.

NextFUMIGREEN celebrates LIFE’s 32nd Anniversary with a commitment to sustainability

BRUSSELS, 21 May – Today, LIFE NextFUMIGREEN joins the celebration of the 32nd anniversary of the LIFE Programme and the Natura 2000 network, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable development and the protection of biodiversity. The LIFE Programme is the only financial instrument of the European Union dedicated exclusively to the environment and climate action. Since 1992, more than 900 LIFE projects have been approved in Spain (5,400 EU-wide), with a total budget of €1,555 million and an EU contribution of €781 million (EU-wide, with a total EU contribution of more than €6.5 billion). Approved in December 2022, the LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project is at the forefront of the implementation of natural biopesticides in greenhouses, marking a milestone in sustainable agriculture and food security. With the support of the European Union’s (EU) LIFE programme, which co-finances the project by 60%, and the collaboration of key partners such as FUMI-HOGAR, B&B ASESORES, Centro Tecnológico Tecnova, Comercial Química Massó, BrioAgro España and the Finnova Foundation, NextFUMIGREEN is setting new standards in the agricultural industry. The project, which has a duration of four and a half years, not only improves food security and biodiversity, but also contributes significantly to the awareness, training and professionalization of farmers in the responsible and effective use of biopesticides. About the LIFE Program The LIFE Programme, the EU’s only financial instrument dedicated exclusively to the environment and climate action, today celebrates 32 years of significant contributions to nature conservation and the promotion of sustainable development in Europe. It has supported more than 5,500 projects, including the creation of the Natura 2000 Network, the world’s largest coordinated network of protected areas, covering 18% of the EU’s land area and more than 9% of its marine territory. Spain, in particular, has been a leader in contributing to this network, with 27% of its terrestrial territory and more than 8% of its marine territory protected under this figure, with nearly 2,000 areas designated for conservation. LIFE’s anniversary is a time to reflect on achievements and strengthen commitment to future challenges in environmental conservation and climate action.
